The Spanish spoken in Venezuela is a variety of Caribbean Spanish; that is, the dialect spoken in Caribbean countries, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, or the Dominican Republic.
However โlike every Spanish-speaking countryโ Venezuelan Spanish has its own peculiarities. And, in fact, there are several Venezuelan accents along this South American country.
Central Venezuelan Spanish
Central Venezuelan or Caracas Spanish is the one spoken in Caracas, Venezuelaโs capital. Caracasโ population is about 2 million inhabitants: itโs the largest and most influential city in cultural, economic, and social terms.
Because of this, most of the national media are based here, which means that the variety of Spanish used in Caracas inevitably influences the variants used in other regions.
Central Venezuelan Spanish is characterised by the use of tรบ as the second person pronoun โyouโ.
Marabino Spanish
Marabino Spanish is the one used in northwestern Venezuela and is spoken by about 5 million people. The main difference with the Spanish of Caracas is that in Marabino Spanish the voseo is predominant; that is, the use of the pronoun tรบ is replaced by the pronoun vos.
However, even within the region, there are some differences in the voseo used.
While in some parts, such as the state of Zulia, the reverential voseo (a form with verbal conjugation that maintains the original diphthong) is used, in other regions, such as the state of Falcรณn, the American dialectal voseo is used (the same one used in countries like Argentina, Uruguay or Nicaragua).
Is this all a bit hard? Donโt worry: here you have a table with the differences between these two types of voseo. Also, in the right column, you can see the same conjugation done with tuteo; that is, how would you say that same phrase in the Spanish of Caracas.
English
Reverencial voseo (Marabino Spanish spoken in Zulia)
Dialectal american voseo (Marabino Spanish spoken in Falcรณn)
Tuteo (spoken in Caracas)
You are
Vos sois
Vos sos
Tรบ eres
You sing
Vos cantรกis
Vos cantรกs
Tรบ cantas
You eat
Vos comรฉis
Vos comรฉs
Tรบ comes
You read
Vos leรฉis
Vos leรฉs
Tรบ lees
Whatโs interesting about this is that voseo reverencial was used in old Spanish; so the equivalent to Englishโs old โthou artโ in Spanish would be โvos soisโ. But these places where they use it today are not Medieval at all, they simply kept some old forms of our language!
Venezuelan Andes Spanish
If you thought that Central Venezuelan Spanish and Marabino Spanish were the only variants of that dialect, you were wrong!
In the area of the Andes mountain range โespecially in those cities near the border with Colombiaโ, the pronoun used by people is neither tรบ nor vos, but usted. Keep in mind that, when using usted, the conjugation of the verb that accompanies the pronoun is modified.
Exactly: in the Andes area, you treat anyone as usted, no matter how confident you are. This is notable news since in the rest of the country (and in a lot of Spanish-speaking countries) the use of the pronoun usted is limited to formal treatment.
Letโs look at some examples:
English
Ustedeo (Spanish used in the Venezuelan Andes)
Tuteo (Spanish used in Caracas)
You are
Usted es
Tรบ eres
You sing
Usted canta
Tรบ cantas
You love
Usted ama
Tรบ amas
You walk
Usted camina
Tรบ caminas
Use of โyouโ in Spanish of the Venezuelan Andes vs Spanish used in Caracas
Characteristics Of Venezuelan Spanish
People in Venezuela speak Spanish, but every region has its own characteristics. Beyond this fact, we can define some dialectal features that are common to most of the territory:
Seseo. This consists of pronouncing the โzโ and the โcโ (this, when accompanied by an โeโ or an โiโ) as an s. This is shared by all Spanish American dialects. In Spain, on the other hand, the sound used for those phonemes is more similar to a th.
Aspiration of the โsโ. In Venezuelan Spanish, the โsโ becomes an โhโ at the end of words. Thus, a phrase like Estamos aquรญ (Weโre here) would be pronounced estamoh aquรญ, and a phrase like El bus no ha llegado aรบn (The bus hasnโt arrived yet) would be pronounced el buh no ha llegado aรบn.
Suppression of the intervocalic โdโ. There are many words in Spanish that end with ado, edo, and ido, but in Venezuelan Spanish itโs common for these suffixes to become ao, eo and io. Thus, pelado (bald) becomes pelao, and morado (purple) becomes morao. By the way: this doesn't happen in all the regions; itโs more common in the midwest.
Diminutives are expressed with ico and ica. In Spanish, diminutives modify the meaning of nouns when you want to give them a shade of small size or little importance. For example, for the expression โlittle whileโ we would say ratito or ratillo in a few countries, although in Venezuela we would say ratico. This feature is shared by many other Caribbean countries, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, or neighbouring Colombia.
Similarities With The Spanish Of The Canary Islands
Fun fact! You probably think that the Spanish spoken in Spain has nothing to do with the accent you can hear in the Caribbean. Well, this is not entirely true: did you know that the Venezuelan Spanish accent has many similarities with the accent in the Canary Islands, the Spanish archipelago?
This has an easy explanation: the Canary Islands and the Caribbean experienced a parallel colonization process.
Castilian Spanish arrived in these islands in the 15th century, and that is when the Canarian dialect began to form, strongly influenced by the accents of Andalusia and Extremadura, two other Spanish regions.
The Canary Islands, then, became an enclave that served as a bridge for expeditions to America. That is why many Caribbean accents have great similarities with the dialect spoken in those lands!
Venezuelan Spanish Vocabulary
Although the Spanish language is shared by 21 countries, there are many exclusive words of the Venezuelan dialect. Next, we bring you a list of those words that you can commonly hear in a conversation in Venezuela.

Venezualan Spanish words
Now, thereโs a Venezuelan word that I think deserves a bit more explanation, since Venezuelans use it all the time: vaina. You can find this filler in every informal conversation, and itโs used to refer to objects or situations.
Letโs see some examples:
ยกQuรฉ vaina! Tengo una reuniรณn por la tarde. (What a drag! I have a meeting in the afternoon.)
Quiero comprar esa vaina que vi en la tienda. (I want to buy that thing I saw in the store.)
ยฟEstudias Arquitectura? ยกEsa vaina debe ser difรญcil! (Do you study Architecture? That career must be hard!.)
Typical Venezuelan Phrases
Now, letโs look at some typical phrases that you'll surely hear in a conversation in Venezuela.
A Llorar Paโl Valle
A llorar paโl valle (where paโl is a contraction of para el, โfor theโ) literally means โGo cry to the valleyโ, and itโs an expression you would say to someone who did not follow your advice, or made a bad decision. Itโs something like โI told you so!โ.
Parar Bolas
Parar bolas (literally, โto stop ballsโ) is a synonym for โpay attention to meโ. You can use it in several contexts:
Deja el telรฉfono y pรกrame bolas. (โLeave the phone and pay me attention!โ.)
El chico que me gusta no me para bolas. (The boy I like doesnโt pay attention to meโ.)
Estรก Peluo
Estรก peluo (where peluo is actually peludo, this is, โhairyโ) is used to refer to a difficult situation. For example, el trรกfico estรก peludo or el examen estรก peluo means โtraffic is heavyโ and โthe exam is hardโ, respectively.
ยฟPendienteโฆ?
Pendiente means โpendingโ, and Venezuelans use this word to make informal invitations: ยฟPendiente unas cervezas? is โLetโs have a beerโ, or ยฟPendiente una peli? is something like: โYou wanna go to the movies with me?โ.
Final Thoughts On Venezuelan Spanish
If you want to learn to speak Spanish as they do in Venezuela, you have to take into account two basic aspects: the aspiration of the โsโ at the end of the words and seseo.
Besides, keep in mind that the second person pronouns change: while in some regions you would say tรบ, in others you would say vos or usted.
Don't worry if this sounds confusing. After all, you can make yourself understood in Venezuela perfectly no matter what dialect of Spanish you are using.
And since the most important thing is that you enjoy the process of learning this beautiful language, use the StoryLearningยฎ system, where you can improve your level of Spanish, learn vocabulary and, along the way, listen to incredible stories.
