Russian Vowels: Master Vowels In Russian To Express Yourself With Ease
by Olly Richards
When you learn Russian, one of the first things you learn is that the Russian alphabet has 33 letters and learning these is essential to mastering the language.
Moreover Russian vowels are one of the trickiest parts of the Russian language. Additionally, understanding Russian vowel-stress is important to speaking Russian like a native.
Thankfully, vowels are a lot more straightforward than in English, so itโs not as hard as it seems. In this article, you'll learn about:
Easy Russian Vowels
Stressed Vowels
Unstressed Vowels
Semi-vowels
Special exceptions
By the way, if you want to learn Russian fast and have fun, my top recommendation is Russian Uncoveredwhich teaches you through StoryLearningยฎ.
With Russian Uncovered youโll use my unique StoryLearningยฎ method to learn Russian through storyโฆ not rules. Itโs as fun as it is effective. If youโre ready to get started, click here for a 7-day FREE trial.
The 10 Russian Vowels
The Russian language has ten vowel letters, known in Russian as ะณะปะฐฬัะฝัะน.
These are:
ะฐ
ั
ั
ะพ
ั
ั
ะต
ะธ
ั
ั
First, Iโll explain how each of these vowels is pronounced when stressed.
A sounds similar to the open โahโ of โfatherโ and โhonestโ. NOT like โcatโ or โbatโ
ะญ is pronounced like the โeโ in โbendโ but with the mouth a bit more open
ะ is an open vowel like the one in โgoโ or โopenโ
ะฃ sounds like the vowel in โschoolโ or โtrueโ but a bit shorter
ะ is pronounced something like the vowel of โkeepโ or โheatโ
The most difficult Russian vowel for English speakers to learn is ั since thereโs no real equivalent. It sounds like something between the short โi' of โitโ or โbigโ and the long vowel of โglee.โ This Russian vowel will definitely need the most practice to master.
The โYotโ Vowels
The vowels ั ะต ั and ั and interesting as they mirror the vowels ะฐ ั ะพ ั but with a โyโ sound at the beginning. In Russian, this sound is called a โyot.โ
ะฏ like โyachtโ
ะ like โyetโ
ะ like โyoghurtโ
Vowels And Stress
When it comes to learning Russian vowels, stress or ัะดะฐัะตฬะฝะธะต is the greatest hurdle to overcome. Several vowels are pronounced differently depending on whether they are stressed or not.
Russian is actually a lot like English this way. Consider how โa greenhouseโ and โa green houseโ have different stress patterns as well as distinct meanings.
Russian works in much the same way, so vowel stress of a word can change both pronunciation and meaning.
Here are some examples:
ะะฐฬะผะพะบ
ZAH-muhk (castle)
ะะฐะผรณะบ
zah-MOHK (lock)
ะัฬะบะฐ
MOO-kuh (pain, anguish)
โโะัะบะฐฬ
moo-KAH (flour)
So how do you learn stress rules? Well unfortunatelyโฆ
There are no set rules for Russian stress patterns
While that may sound difficult, donโt be discouraged! There are a lot of guidelines to help you. Moreover, Russian vowel stress is a lot less arduous than it may first appear. Once you become familiar with a few patterns, you start to get an intuition for Russian stress.
To explain this better, Iโll first go over the easy and straightforward vowels. After that, weโll explain the trickier vowels. That way you can master Russian vowel stress in no time.
Easy Unstressed Vowels
Hereโs the good news. The majority of unstressed vowels in Russian are the same as their stressed counterparts, but just a bit shorter and with less emphasis.
The letters ะธ and ั when unstressed are simply shorter than when stressed, but there is no real sound change.
ะงะธัะฐฬั
chee-TAH-yoo (I read)
ะัะปะฐฬ
by-LAH (she was)
The letters ั and ั are virtually the same whether stressed or unstressed as well. The only difference is that some speakers will round their lips a bit less in the unstressed version.
ะฃฬะบััั
OOK-soos (vinegar)
ะงะธัะฐฬั
chee-TAH-yoo (I read)
The vowel ั may sound a bit more like the โi' in โitโ or โkitโ when unstressed.
The vowel ั only occurs as a stressed vowel. So you donโt have to worry about it being unstressed.
The Challenging Russian Vowels
Now onto the more difficult Russian vowels โ ะฐ, ั, ะต and ะพ. None of these are terribly difficult, but they do take a bit of practice.
Letโs start with the two yot sounds ะต and ั. Both of these tend to move from full sounds to something like the โyiโ in โyipโ but with the lips a bit more rounded.
ะฏะทัฬะบ
yi-ZYK (tongue, language)
ะะถะตะดะฝะตฬะฒะฝะพ
yi-zhyd-NYEV-nuh (daily)
These two vowels also turn into a schwa sound in some situations. A schwa is the โuhโ vowel in words like โaboutโ, โundoโ or โcommaโ. With the vowels ั and ะต, this happens regularly after the vowel ะธ.
ะะธะพะปะพฬะณะธั
bee-ah-LOH-gee-uh (biology)
ะ ะพััะธฬั
rahs-SEE-uh (Russia)
ะฟะพะปะพะถะตฬะฝะธะต
puh-lah-ZHE-nee-uh (position, location)
ะะตฬะนััะฒะธะต
DEYST-vee-uh (action)
When unstressed, the letter โaโ is pronounced as either โahโ (as in father) or as a schwa. Most often, itโs reduced to the schwa sound (uh). This is particularly common at the end of words.
ะผะฐัะธฬะฝะฐ
mah-SHEE-nuh (car, machine)
ะะฝะธฬะณะฐ
KNEE-guh (book)
Of all the Russian vowels, the letter โะโ undergoes the most changes depending on stress. When stressed it sounds like the โoโ in โgoโ.
ะะพะผ
DOHM (house)
ะะตัะตะฒะพฬะด
pyi-ri-VOHT (translation)
However, when unstressed, the โO' may be pronounced as either โahโ (as in father) or the schwa/uh sound. Often, itโs pronounced as โahโ when itโs before the stressed vowel.
And if a word ends with an unstressed โohโ it often is pronounced as a schwa. That may sound confusing, but with a bit of practice it will quickly feel natural.
ะะพะดะพฬะน
vah-DOY (with water)
ะะดะธฬะฝ
ah-DEEN (one)
ะ ะฐฬะฝะพ
RAH-nuh (early)
ะะพฬะทะดะฝะพ
POHZD-nuh (late)
You can see/hear all three of these oโs in the words ะผะพะปะพะบะพ, ั ะพัะพัะพ, ะฑะพะปััะพะณะพ and ะพััะพัะพะถะฝะพ.
ะะพะปะพะบะพฬ
muh-lah-KOH (milk)
ะฅะพัะพัะพฬ
khuh-rah-SHOH (good)
ะะพะปััะพฬะณะพ
bahl-SHOH-vuh (big)
ะััะพัะพฬะถะฝะพ
ah-stah-ROZH-nuh (careful)
Loanwords, Semivowels, And Exceptions
While stress in Russian might be unpredictable, the rules about it remain quite consistent. The only exceptions you should know are loanwords.
For example, these may keep full oโs even when they're not stressed. Thankfully, such words are easy to spot since they are often cognates with English terms.
ะ ะฐะดะธะพ (radio) RAH-dee-oh NOT RAH-dee-uh
ะะฐะบะฐะพ (cacao) kah-KAH-oh NOT kah-KAH-uh
In addition to the vowels, the Russian language also has the semivowel ะน. This letter functions much like the English โyโ acting sometimes as a vowel (baby, byte) and sometimes like a consonant (yin, yang).
Most of the time, the letter ะน appears at the end of a syllable after a vowel and adds a โyโ sound to the end.
ะณะปะฐฬัะฝัะน
GLAHS-nyy (vowel, open)
ััฬััะบะธะน
ROOS-skiy (Russian)
ะะฐะฒะฐฬะน
dah-VAY (letโs go, come on)
ะะตฬะนััะฒะธะต
DEYST-vee-uh (action)
ัะนัะพฬ
yay-TSOH (egg)
ะทะตะผะฝะพฬะน
zem-NOY (earthly)
The semi-vowel ะน is very rarely used at the beginning of a word or syllable. When this does happen, itโs almost exclusively with loanwords.
ะะพฬะณััั (yoghurt)
ะะพฬะณะฐ (yoga)
ะัั-ะะพฬัะบ (New York)
Going Forward With Russian Vowels
Now you should have an overview of all the Russian vowels. Just remember that the difference between stressed and unstressed vowels may seem tricky at first, but youโll develop an intuition for it over time.
And to help you along in that process, make sure you're listening to plenty of Russian. You could watch Russian movies on Netflix for example. You can also apply the core of the StoryLearningยฎ method and listen to short stories in Russian.
Whatever way you prefer to listen to Russian, regular immersion is the key to mastering Russian pronunciation and Russian vowels.
