50 Chinese Slang Words That Will Help You Sound Like A Native Speaker
by Olly Richards
When you learn Chinese, you'll come across plenty of Chinese slang โ the kind of vocabulary and expressions youโre more likely to hear on the street when talking to real people than in your textbook.
As with most languages, lots of Chinese slang is vulgar, and thereโs no shortage of words for everything to do with sex and defecation.
Here, Iโm going to try to keep things as clean as possible, avoiding some of the cruder elements of Chinese slang โ but even without some of the more unsavoury examples, thereโs still plenty of other colourful words to learn.
In this post, Iโll give you some of the most interesting, the most common and the most useful examples of Chinese spoken and internet slang โ so letโs jump right in and take a look!
By the way, if you want to learn Chinese fast and have fun, my top recommendation is Chinese Uncovered which teaches you through StoryLearningยฎ.
With Chinese Uncovered youโll use my unique StoryLearningยฎ method to learn Chinese through storyโฆ not rules. Itโs as fun as it is effective. If youโre ready to get started, click here for a 7-day FREE trial.
Common Chinese Slang Words
Hereโs a list of some of the most common slang words youโre likely to meet in the spoken language. Many of them have been around for some time while others are more recent additions.
#1 ๅๅฝ hฤlรณu (Hello)
This is obviously an English loanword. Itโs used as a friendly alternative to the more formal or stuffy ไฝ ๅฅฝ nฤญ hฤo. Another similar possibility is ๅจ hฤi, which works in the same way.
#2 ๆๆ bฤibฤi (Bye Bye)
Far more common than ๅๅฝ hฤlรณu above, this loanword from English has been in use for decades. It is used in place of the more formal ๅ่ง zร ijiร n.
#3 ็ niรบ (Awesome)
This is a common way to say you think something is great, awesome or impressive. For example, if you tell someone you can speak five languages, they might reply ๅพ็๏ผ hฤn niรบ!
This is quite a strange expression โ because ็ niรบ literally means โcowโ. In many cases, it can be used as the equivalent of the non-slang term ๅๅฎณ lรฌhai.
#5 ๅ ญ liรน (Awesome)
ๅ ญ liรน (six) is used in much the same way as ็ niรบ to mean great or awesome. It is often accompanied by the Chinese hand signal for six โ and online, people also use the emoji for the same reason.
For the scuba divers out there, if you ever dive with Chinese, you might also see them making the hand signal for โsixโ while underwater, in which case theyโve probably seen a particularly cool fish!
#6 ๅๅก wฤsร i (Wow)
This is an exclamation used to express surprise, admiration or other similar emotions.
#7 ๅ wฤ (Wah, Wow)
This is similar to ๅๅก wฤsร i above and is usually used when you are impressed by something.
#8 ้ ท kรน (Cool)
This is another loanword from English โ itโs the Chinese version of โcoolโ. For example, if someone asks what your job is and you tell them youโre a DJ, they might reply, ๅ๏ผไฝ ๅพ้ ท๏ผWฤ! Nฤญ hฤn kรน! (Wow! Youโre really cool!)
#9 ไบ้ผ รจrbฤซ (Stupid Person, Idiot)
A fairly unfriendly way to tell someone theyโre stupid.
#10 ๅฅไปฌๅฟ gฤmenr (Dude, Bro)
Usually used among younger, cooler males, this is the Chinese equivalent of something like โbroโ or โdudeโ.
#11 ๅ่ mร imรฉng (Be Deliberately Cute)
Hereโs an interesting word that means โto deliberately act cuteโ, usually used to describe a girl acting in this way.
It comes from a Japanese word used to describe affection for a cute character, especially one in manga.
#12 ABC American Born Chinese
If you hear someone described as โABCโ, it means they are an โAmerican Born Chineseโ โ or sometimes more generally, a Chinese person born overseas.
Sometimes it is used in a disparaging way to describe Chinese people from the US or other countries who think of themselves as Chinese but who donโt really understand Chinese culture.
#13 ๅฅ shรก (What) ไปไน
This word is a shortened version of ไปไน shรฉnme (what) and is analogous to English contractions like โdunnoโ or โgonnaโ. For example, you might hear someone say ๅฅๆๆ๏ผshรก yรฌsi? instead of ไปไนๆๆ๏ผshรฉnme yรฌsi? to mean โwhat do you mean?โ
#14 ๅ zฤ (How) ๆไน
ๅ zฤ is similar to ๅฅ shรก above, this time used in place of ๆไน zฤnme, meaning โhowโ.
#15 ๅๅฟ tรณngzhรฌ (Homosexual)
Chinese has a wide range of colourful slang words for all kinds of things to do with sex, but Iโll leave you to find most of those by yourself.
Iโll just include this well-known and mostly inoffensive word for a homosexual. The literal meaning of ๅๅฟ tรณngzhรฌ is โcomradeโ.
#16 ๆตทๅฝ hฤiguฤซ (A Person Who Left China And Came Back With New Experience)
The first character of this word means โseaโ and the second means โreturnโ. Itโs a play on words since ๆตท้พ hฤiguฤซ, which is pronounced in the same way, means โsea turtleโ!
#17 ็ฏๆณก dฤngpร o (A Third Person Spoiling A Date)
This word literally means โelectric light bulbโ but is used as a slang term for an unwelcome third person who is spoiling a coupleโs date.
#18 ๆพ้ธฝๅญ fร ng gฤzi (To Stand Somebody Up)
Iโm not sure if this really counts as slang or if itโs just an expression, but itโs a fun one to know, so I wanted to include it anyway. It means โto stand somebody upโ โ literally, the meaning is โput a pigeonโ!
#19 ็่ค่ lร ihรกma (An Ugly Boy)
A fairly self-explanatory one and an expression that works in English too. Literally, it means โtoadโ.
#20 ้่ qฤซngwฤ (An Ugly Boy)
The same as the one above, this time meaning โfrogโ โ although less commonly used like this.
#21 ็ปฟ่ถ lวchรก (A Girl Who Is Seemingly Innocent But Actually Manipulative)
An interesting expression that literally means โgreen teaโ! You may also hear ็ปฟ่ถๅฉ lวchรกbiฤo. ๅฉ biฤo is a word meaning โprostituteโ or โwhoreโ, and the expression can be translated as โgreen tea bitchโ. It is used to describe someone with this kind of behaviour.
#22 ๅๆ biร ntร i (Pervert)
This word literally means โoddโ or โabnormalโ.
#23 ๅ่ฑช tลญhรกo (Nouveau Riche)
With the increasing number of super-rich in China, thereโs no shortage of people with plenty of money but little class.
#24 ๅกๅฐ่ต fรกnโฤrsร i (Humblebrag)
In Chinese culture, the rich have traditionally flaunted their wealth, but seeing the wealthy show off their money when others are paid low wages is increasingly seen as distasteful. So many have now adopted the art of the โhumblebragโ on their social media accounts.
#25 ๅจ็ฎ niรกngpร o (An Effeminate Man)
A well-known expression for this.
#26 ๅญฆ้ธ xuรฉbร (Top Student)
A student who always studies hard and is always top of the class.
#27 ๅค็ซๅญ yรจmฤozi (Night Owl)
In Chinese, you donโt say โnight owlโ โ you say โnight catโ!
#28 ๆ้ๅฅณ bร ijฤซnnว (Gold Digger)
A materialistic woman who likes to spend money, especially one who spends the money of a rich man.
#29 ๆๅ ๆ yuรจguฤngzรบ (People Who Spend All Their Money Before Their Next Payday)
Used to describe people who always spend all their money before their next payday comes around. ๆ zรบ means โclanโ or โraceโ and is usually used with words for ethnicities โ so this expression is describing these people as belonging to a kind of โtribeโ.
#30 ๆ็็ฒฎ sฤgลuliรกng (Be Lovey-Dovey In Public)
This kind of behaviour is generally frowned on in East Asian culture, although it is now perhaps more accepted in China than in Southeast Asia.
#31 ็ฑ่ฑ ร idรฒu (Idol)
A loanword from English!
Chinese Internet Slang ็ฝ็ป่ฏญ่จ wฤngluรฒyลญyรกn
As you may expect, the internet has been a fertile breeding ground for the creative use of language. Hereโs just a small selection of some of the most common words and expressions youโre likely to see.
#32 ๅง jiลng (Awkward, Embarrassed)
This old and rarely used character has been repurposed by Chinese netizens to mean โawkwardโ or โembarrassedโ โ because it looks like someone with that kind of expression on their face. It isnโt used in spoken Chinese. Originally, this character meant โwindowโ.
#33 88 (Bye Bye)
The internet version of โbye byeโ โ because ๅ ซๅ ซ bฤbฤ (โ88โ) sounds a bit like ๆๆ bฤibฤi!
#34 3Q (Thankyou)
Because ไธQ (sฤn Q)sounds like โthankyouโ!
#35 250 รจrbฤiwลญ (Stupid person, idiot)
The same as ไบ้ผ รจrbฤซ that we saw above. You can also use this when speaking normally.
#36 ่ต zร n (To โlikeโ)
This literally means โto praiseโ and is also now used for when you hit the โlikeโ button.
#37 ไบฒ qฤซn (Dear)
A term of endearment used online.
#38 ่่ๅ mรฉngmรฉngdฤ (Adorable)
Internet slang to say something is totally cute or adorable.
#39 ๅคง็ฅ dร shรฉn (Guru)
Somebody online who is an expert or a guru in a certain activity.
#40 ๅญ้ๅฅณ kลngquรจnว (Spoiled Rich Girl From The City)
An interesting term since it literally means โpeacock girlโ.
#41 ๅคๅฐ็ท fรจnghuรกngnรกn (Country Boy Who Marries A City Girl)
Usually used to denigrate a boy from the countryside who comes to the city and marries a city girl but who is still seen as an unsophisticated peasant.
#42 ็ซๆๆ huลxฤซngwรฉn (โMartian languageโ, Internet Language Used To Speak In Code)
This literally translates as โMartian languageโ and is used to describe using internet slang or speaking in code so that other people donโt understand or to avoid censorship.
Alternative Spellings For Chinese Internet Slang
As well as the common internet slang terms above, thereโs another category of Chinese internet slang where different characters are used in the place of the regular ones, changing the pronunciation slightly.
This is a bit like the Chinese version of using abbreviations like โlolโ or โbrbโ. Because itโs written in characters, Chinese doesnโt really lend itself to abbreviations like this in the same way as English, but using internet alternatives makes online language seem cuter and more fun.
However, most of the time, the alternative spellings donโt have any particular meaning.
Using these when chatting online is a sure way to impress your Chinese friends โ so here are a few of the most common examples:
#43 ๆญชๆไป wฤiguลrรฉn (Foreigner)
Instead of ๅคๅฝไบบ wร iguรณrรฉn.
#44 ็ถ้น rรกnโรฉ (However)
Instead of ็ถ่ rรกnโรฉr.
#45 ็ฅ้ฉฌ shรฉnmฤ (What)
Instead of ไปไน shรฉnme.
#46 ่ฟไน zhลngme (How)
Instead ofๆไน zฤnme.
#47 ็ท็ฅจ nรกnpiร o (Boyfriend)
Instead of ็ทๆๅ nรกnpรฉngyลu.
#48 ๅฅณ็ฅจ nวpiร o (Girlfriend)
Instead of ๅฅณๆๅ nวpรฉngyลu.
#49 ็ๅ pรฉnyลu (Friend)
Instead ofๆๅ pรฉngyลu.
#50 ่พฃ้ธก lร jฤซ (Rubbish, garbage)
Instead of ๅๅพ lฤjฤซ. This one is particularly interesting because the usual word for โrubbishโ is replaced by โspicy chickenโ!
A Wealth Of Colourful Words And Expressions To Play With
As you can see, Chinese has plenty of fun, creative and interesting slang words and expressions for you to learn and play with.
In informal settings, itโs important to know some of the more common ones because youโre likely to hear them being used. Watching Chinese shows on Netflix could be a great way to pick up Chinese slang in context.
And if you can slip a couple into conversation, youโre sure to impress your Chinese friends too. ๅพ็๏ผHฤn niรบ!
